THE REBUILD

I first read about Scott Pape's buckets while I was closing Stella and needed to pay down what running it had left me holding.

The shape made sense immediately, and the 20 per cent fire extinguisher bucket had an obvious job. Everything I could spare went at the debt, so that bucket was the point of the whole system.

My smile and splurge buckets stayed in from the start in whatever amounts the fortnight allowed. That was for my sanity rather than my balance. A plan that left room to splurge on a dinner with friends or new sneakers was a plan I would still be running in March.

Each fortnight when my pay was processed I worked out the 20, the 10 and the 10. Then I made everyday life fit inside the 60 that was left. That second part took effort.

I moved into a smaller rental unit. I paused a streaming service. I bought the no-brand groceries in bulk and drove to the cheaper fuel. I reduced my mobile use and brought the power bill down. Anyone who has made a budget fit a smaller number knows which line goes first. Some fortnights the figures still came up short, and the 20, 10 and 10 ran as 20, 5 and 5 instead.

The cuts had a floor and I found it. The figures said the debt would clear at the speed my income allowed and no faster, so I went at the income. I took freelance communications work alongside the job, then landed a better paid role. That did more for the fire extinguisher than the grocery aisle ever could.

Those moving figures are why the payments stayed manual, fortnight by fortnight.

Once the last payment plan closed, I automated the lot. Three payments leave my main account each fortnight, for the fire extinguisher, the smile account and the splurge account, and when my income changes the automations change with it. The calculating happens once rather than every payday. The fire extinguisher changed jobs from tackling debt to saving for a deposit on a house and now it goes towards my mortgage.

The psychology took a couple of months to start working, and then it worked on me exactly as advertised. As the buckets began to fill, my sense of self did too. The splurge balance told me whether the dinner with friends or the new sneakers could happen. The answer arrived as a number rather than as a feeling. The smile account growing meant I could plan a holiday, for the first time in years.

In Papua New Guinea automation sits inside the banking apps. BSP's internet banking terms name "Future-dated and Recurring Transfers", and Kina's personal online banking lists "Manage Favourites and Recurring Transactions". Westpac's mobile app FAQ describes balance enquiries and biller payments and stops there. A payroll does the same job through a salary deduction, from K20 a fortnight at TISA and NCSL.

A repeating transfer can also feed money you plan to leave alone. Nasfund takes Eda Supa contributions by internet banking and opens the account at K100, and the Superannuation Act decides when a member takes the money out, with a housing advance available after five years.

Pape gave me the shape while I was still paying off Stella. The instruction is what filled it, and the first thing it filled was a holiday to Sri Lanka that I could finally plan.

TOMORROW

The expenses I already know are coming, and the old technique that names them before they arrive.

Best
